UM Visits University of São Paulo Medical School

On June 24, 2008, President Donna E. Shalala visited the University of São Paulo Medical School and spoke to a group of the school’s faculty, students, and administrators about new initiatives at the Miller School of Medicine and the University of Miami’s outreach efforts in Latin America and the Caribbean.

President Shalala noted that the study of medicine is moving into a bold, new era in the 21st century: “We have entered into an exciting time when the ‘what if’s’, given the right investment of human and financial capital, can become the ‘why not’s.’ Medical schools have always been at the forefront of where learning and research extend beyond the classroom and the laboratory and connect directly with the public at a personal and transformational level. Medical schools have also traditionally served as interdisciplinary hubs where students and faculty from other areas of study can come together to integrate each discipline’s unique way of seeing the world and solving its problems. So it’s no surprise that medical schools can bring these strengths and resources to the table to make a real and immediate difference in the quality of life of millions at a local, regional, national, and global level. The University of Miami Miller School of Medicine is truly making that difference.”
